The Act is an essential part of the government’s action plan called It’s Never Okay, a plan to stop sexual violence and harassment. The Actamends six existing pieces of legislation to enhance protections in four key areas.
With all the recent cutbacks to compensation and restrictions on the rights of injured people to access the civil justice system, it’s nice, for a change, to be able to highlight some positive changes introduced by the government that will actually help protect and enhance the rights of injured people.
There is a lot more that needs to be done to effectively address problems of sexual violence in Ontario and beyond, but the reforms brought about in this legislation are a step in the right direction.
